Melisma

This sound work is a digitally reworked version, obtained by slowing down and warping the recording of an excerpt of a cartoon by Walt Disney from 1955.
It is an intricate tangle of moans, howlings, burps, sneers. Always balancing between ambiguous human voices and animal choruses, it stretches simultaneously into a constant barking, a grotesque, guttural gospel, an ancient lament.
It expresses an inevitable blooming that transcends being a decorative step and becomes instead an integral part, a self-standing melodic phrase, inherent in a beastly and yet terribly human speech act.
Melisma is the act of being in a chant.
